"Every Day Counts"
'every student in class every day'
We have recently received a letter from the Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh MP and the Minister for Education and Training, Geoff Wilson MP in regard to the performance of Queensland schools in the 2009 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests conducted in May this year for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
This letter acknowledged how well our school had done in the 2009 test results, our school has shown significant improvement in areas of the testing. We were commended and congratulated on our results with these results heading in the right direction securing an important outcome for our school community.
The 2010 school year will see us continue to focus on boosting the Literacy and Numeracy outcomes for every student in our school. Commencing this term as part of the National Partnership Schools Project, our school has had a Literacy Coach appointed to work with our Year 3 and 4 teachers focusing on reading comprehension with students in these year levels.
We welcome Ms Sharon Kelly to our school. Ms Kelly’s timetable will be finalised by the end of this week and we expect that she will be on campus for 3 days each week. Ms Kelly will also be working with the Granville State School community for the remaining two days each week.
National Assessment Program (NAP)
As part of the National Assessment Program (NAP) of Australian students in 2009, year 6 classes in 650 schools have been selected nationwide to take part in an assessment to be administered this Wednesday 14th October from 9.00am. This is to be an assessment of Science Literacy (SL). One of our year 6 classes, 6K, has been selected to participate in this process. Our school has not participated in this assessment previously.
It is essential that students from 6K who will be attending next Wednesday are here for the first bell, to give all students the best chance at an organised start. Your child need do nothing in particular to prepare themselves for this assessment, apart from getting a good night’s rest, having a good breakfast and arriving at school in a timely fashion.
Students from our Senior Choir are to perform at Choral Fest on Wednesday 14th October, the same day as the NAP-SL assessment. It is my position that priority be accorded to participation in the assessment –students are expected to be here for this testing. I appreciate that the clash of dates is unfortunate, however, it has been unavoidable as both dates are set by bodies outside the school.
Pet Pep program
Year 4 students will participate in a “Pet Pep” program tomorrow. Topics covered will be Caring for your Pet’s Health and the role of a Veterinarian, responsible pet ownership, dog handling and training. Cost will be a gold coin donation.
Choral Fest
This Wednesday the Senior Choir will perform at Choral Fest at the Brolga Theatre from 9.15am. Students need to be at school by 8.00am in their Choir Uniform.
Starlab Planetarium
Year 3 students will view a presentation through the Starlab Planetarium this Wednesday in the activity hall. This presentation covers night and day around the world, the reasons for seasons, phases of the moon and our solar system. This will be instead of Term 4 Arts Council next week.
P & C Meeting
Meeting date for October has been changed to tomorrow night -Tuesday October 13th at 7.00pm in the Staffroom. This meeting will focus on Family Fun Fair preparations.
Pupil Free Day
Next Monday 19 October is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be engaged in Professional Development on this day.
Robyn Jackson,
Principal

YEAR 4/5/6 SWIMMING
Last Thursday students in years 4, 5 and 6 attended their first swimming lesson. This year our students are participating in the new Maryborough Zone Swim and Survival Program.
Those students who have not brought back notes and money, please bring it in A.S.A.P.
Those students who are not swimming must submit a note to the Principal explaining their withdrawal from the swimming program/P.E. curriculum.
I cannot stress enough, the importance of all students learning how to swim and learning survival techniques. Living in Queensland allows our children the opportunity to participate in many water sports throughout their lifetime. Ensuring all children can swim and survive when faced with difficulty in the water is a priority in order to keep them safe.
REMEMBER TOGS AND TOWELS EVERY THURSDAY!!
YEAR 6 - INTERSCHOOL SPORT
Last week our year 6 students signed up for a sport they will be participating in during Interschool sport on Friday afternoon from October 23rd – November 27th. They had a choice of touch football, softball, basketball, super 8’s cricket and A.F.L.
A note regarding interschool sport was sent home last week.
Please return note and money by Tuesday, October 20th.
STATE CRICKET
Last week the Maryborough Zone Boys and Girls cricket teams competed at the Wide Bay Trials in Bundaberg. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mr Finn for coaching the Maryborough Zone Boy’s Cricket Team last week at the Wide Bay Trials. We all appreciate your time and effort. Thankyou!

Arts Council News
Term 4 Arts Council performance “The Beatty Clan Crew” will be held next Wednesday 21 October for Prep to Year 7 (not including Year 3’s). Cost will be $6 per student or $15 for family of 3 or more. Envelopes have been sent home today.
Fusing traditional Australian Indigenous dance with modern hip hop and funk, The Beatty Clan Crew teaches students about Australia’s unique history of dance. This internationally renowned family group, including Taryn Laleen, Sam Dynamyte, Lil’ Mo’ and Ninni, perform a repertoire of dance styles including electric boogie, beat boxing, hip hop dancing, along with traditional Torres Strait Island songs and drumming. This production is a fresh and contemporary journey that fuses aspects of Indigenous and youth cultures, illustrating how music and dance is fundamental to both.
