Instrumental Music Workshops at the Brolga Theatre
Last Tuesday and Wednesday our Beginner and Non Beginner students participated in all day workshops at the Brolga Theatre performing in free concerts during the afternoon and evening. Students and teachers should be duly proud of their efforts and performances that were of a high calibre and showed the commitment that is needed to learn an instrument and be part of a performing group, be it the Concert Band, Strings Ensemble or Choir.

International Cleaners Day
Our school would like to acknowledge our Cleaning Staff, Helen, Lynn, Dianne, Bev and John for the excellent and committed work that they perform every day in keeping our school buildings clean and tidy for the benefit of all students and staff. Thank you.

P & C Meeting will be held tomorrow evening at 7.00pm in the Staffroom. Our school community is welcome to attend as we will be having important discussions about the Term 2 Disco and the Family Fun Fair.

Staff Updates
Mrs Jackie Roberts will be extending her appointment as Acting Principal at Kia-Ora State School until Friday 21 August. Mrs Val Newman will be continuing as the Year 5R teacher until this time.

NAPLAN 2010 Testing Dates
NAPLAN 2010 will be held in the week from Monday 10 May to Friday 14 May 2010. The dates for the tests are Tuesday 11 May 2010, Wednesday 12 May 2010 and Thursday 13 May 2010. Parents and Caregivers are being informed of these test dates so that family commitments are not planned for the test week. School arrangements will also ensure that bookings for camps, excursions or sporting events do not occur during this period.

H1N1 Influenza A
The continued emphasis on good hygiene practices is the best way to protect our students, staff and schools from H1N1 Influenza A (Human Swine Influenza).

What is the best way to protect myself from H1N1 Influenza A (Human Swine Influenza)?

For both seasonal and H1N1 Influenza A (Human Swine Influenza), the best way to protect yourself and others is to:
·            stay home when you are sick
·            wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand gel
·            wash your hands prior to touching your eyes, nose and mouth
·            when coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with disposable tissues which should be disposed of immediately
·            do not share items such as cigarettes, glasses or cups, lipstick, toys or anything which could be contaminated with respiratory secretions
·            maintain at least a one metre distance from people who have flu-like symptoms such as coughing or sneezing
·            consult your doctor if you have a cough and fever. Follow their instructions, including taking medicine as prescribed.
·            if attending a medical practice or hospital Emergency Department, telephone beforehand so that they can arrange for you to be seen away from other people.

For further information contact your local doctor, population health unit, ring 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or visit the Queensland Health Website at http://www.health.qld.gov.au/swineflu.

School Zone
A reminder to our school community that Maryborough West State School has a boundary of two school zones where reduced speed limits are in place on school days. Our first school zone is located in Ariadne Street with a 40kph speed limit operating between 7.30-9.00am and from 2.30-4.00pm. The next speed zone is in North Street and operates from 7.30am–4.00pm at 40kph. It is vitally important that speed limits in these zones are observed to ensure the safety of our students during arrival and departure times on school days. We thank you for your understanding and co-operation in the above matter.

Dress Code
As part of our Dress Code, students have the flexibility to wear a range of styles as the school uniform. During our winter terms, Term 2 and 3, the expectation is that both boys and girls will wear the winter uniform which consists of either a royal blue cardigan / jacket / sweatshirt and royal blue track pants. No jeans and board shorts are to be worn to school. Make-up, nail polish and stick on tattoos are not part of the school uniform. Students will be asked to the office to have this form of adornment removed. We would like to enlist the help of parents to assist us to discourage these practices during school terms.
