"Every Day Counts"
'every student in class every day'
Instrumental Music
Our Junior and Senior Concert Band performed very well at the Children’s Week event in Queens Park last Thursday. Our bands played a repertoire of six pieces which was appreciated by the audience. Thanks to Mrs Young for organising and conducting at this performance.
Sun Smart
Maryborough West State School is a Sun Smart School. A broad brimmed hat, slouch hat or legionnaire cap is required to be worn at all times. Students need to have a hat with them for all school activities including lunch break and play times. Hats should also be worn to and from school. Our school enforces Sun Smart messages to Slip, Slop, Slap and a “no hat-no play” policy is endorsed by the school community.
The following policy has been developed in consultation with the school community. The Sun Smart Policy is consistent with our school’s caring ethos as it attempts to ensure that our children enjoy life without the consequences of skin cancer. It aims to achieve this through:
Ø Awareness of the dangers of excessive exposure to the sun.
Ø Consistent modelling of “sun wise” behaviour by staff and other adults.
Ø Organisation and procedures minimising the amount of exposure to the sun experienced by students whilst at school and at school related activities.
We recognise that children are more inclined to adopt the above precautions on a lifelong basis when they are educated regarding the dangers of excessive exposure to sunlight and when sound habits are formed at an early age. We therefore set the expectation that these procedures will be followed at school and reinforced in appropriate ways.
Dress Code
Last week there were several students who were reported to the office for wearing nail polish or acrylic nails to school. This is not part of the school uniform and students will be asked to remove nail polish and acrylic nails during their own time. Consequences of this non compliance could lead to non participation in extra curricula activities.
Class Lists
School staff members are currently composing Class Lists for 2010. Our process for doing this attempts to create balanced and harmonious class groups, taking into account many and varied factors. Also to facilitate end of year processes, could parents please advise the school if your family / children are transferring to another school at the end of the year.
Robyn Jackson,
Principal

Safety House News
The Safety House West Committee wishes to thank everyone who helped with baking for the Fun Fair. We had such a huge response and thanks to all of YOU who supported, we made enough money (over $1000.00) to cover the Affiliation Fee for the school for the year. It was especially nice to meet some of you at the Safety House stall personally. THANK YOU and keep up the good work.
We would like to remind everyone, especially the children to talk to mum, dad or their caregiver, about where the Safety Houses are in your neighbourhood. If you go out with your friends, make sure you tell someone where and what you are going to do. Don't forget to knock on a Safety House door:
  • when you are frightened by a person
  • when you are injured or lost
  • when you are being bullied
  • when you are feeling scared
  • when you are frightened by animals such as magpies
But remember, always go to the FRONT DOOR, knock loudly, ring the bell or yell out. The people from the Safety House will then contact the police.
Our next Safety House meeting will on the 4 November 2009, 7.00pm at 51 Walker Street Maryborough. Everyone welcome.

Parents / Caregivers are invited to
a ‘Parent / Caregivers only’ Orientation Meeting
at Maryborough West State School
on Monday 30 November
from 9am to 10am in our Activity Hall.
At this meeting you will be given more information about the Prep year and a list of items your child will need when starting Prep. We hope you find our Open Day and Parent/ Caregiver Orientation Meeting helpful for your child’s start at Maryborough West State School in 2010.
