Impact of Human Swine Flu management on Queensland schools.
You may have heard recent media reports that national authorities have moved to a new “protect” response phase to manage the outbreak of H1N1 Influenza 09 (also known as Human Swine Influenza) in Australia.
Queensland’s Deputy Premier and Health Minister Paul Lucas said Queensland would move to the new protect phase from next Monday (June 22) but would keep its policy of school exclusions and school closures in place until the end of term next Friday (June 26).
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said the extra week of possible school closures followed by school holidays provided a circuit breaker, further lessening the spread and the potential impacts to the Queensland community.
Dr Young has advised that Queensland’s efforts to restrict the spread of H1N1 Influenza 09 have been very effective and will continue until the end of Term 2 on 26 June.
It means that until Friday 26 June our school will:
· Continue to be prepared to act quickly to close the school to students if advised to do so by Queensland Health.
· Continue the current guidelines for seven-day time-out for any students returning to Queensland from areas of concern, including Victoria.
Because the seven-day time-out guidelines for students end on 26 June, there will be no restrictions on students entering Queensland from areas of concern including Mexico, the United States of America, Canada, Panama, Japan, Chile and Argentina or students that are returning from Victoria after that date.
In addition study tours and International Student Programs will no longer be affected by H1N1 Influenza 09 after 26 June.
Education Queensland is working closely with Queensland Health and will continue to be guided by the advice provided by their medical experts in relation to any situations where action by schools would benefit the school and broader community.
Term 2 concludes this Friday 26 June and Term 3 Commences with a Pupil Free Day on Monday 13 July for all staff. Students will start on Tuesday 14 July.

Principal

Resource Centre News
A Special Thank you to everyone who has helped to stitch and cover hundreds of library resources this semester. If you still have resources please return the books as soon as possible.
Please remember to return all library books by the 23rd June 2009. Student borrowing stopped last Friday.
Winter is the best time to curl up with a good book, so for holiday reading please see the library staff and borrow some good books. Sometimes books over the holidays stay on holidays and never return to school so be very responsible with our books during the winter break. All overdue books need to be returned by Wednesday this week. If anyone is planning to travel over the holidays please return all library books.
Dates to Remember

Why learn a second language?
By learning another language our children will:

· Gain a better understanding of English, by understanding that all languages have patterns and rules to follow.
· Give emphasis to social interaction and the importance of relationships in their own culture as well as others.
· Be able to see the world from a different perspective and develop cultural and intercultural awareness.
· Develop sensitivity and understanding by learning about another culture’s language, customs and ideals.
· Encourage and develop positive self-esteem through allowing success and learning about something completely new.
· Really enjoy learning through a variety of different activities such as songs, games, stories and interactive communication technologies.
· Develop life-long skills invaluable to their work and social lives. Skills such as; team building skills, tolerance, awareness of cultural values and practices, planning and initiative, all of which are developed in the studies of languages.
Year six and seven Japanese Family Tree Project
Over the past few weeks the Year six and seven students have been working hard to complete their own individual presentations about their family in Japanese. The students have chosen a poster or power point style to present their projects to the class. They have learnt their speeches off by heart. The speeches include an introduction of each family member, their likes, dislikes, hobbies, age, and where they live. It is pleasing to see our senior students working to produce such excellent work. Well done, Year six and seven students!
Japanese Club
Each Tuesday lunch time students are given the opportunity to participate in Japanese Club. Japanese Club activities include a variety of cultural experiences such as; origami making, traditional Japanese games, cooking, clothing, Japanese anime and calligraphy. The first two sessions this term Year six and seven students cooked Onigiri (rice balls). The club activities give the students a great opportunity to experience Japanese culture. The Japanese Club has become a popular activity for students each week.
