"Every Day Counts" 'every student in class every day'
Fun Fair
Our Fun Fair last Friday night was an excellent reflection of the support of our school community for our students. Packed houses to view students involved in year level or class presentations gave a clear indication of the support these students enjoy. Our P&C worked tirelessly to prepare this major annual event and are offered sincere thanks and congratulations for the fruits of their labour. Thanks also to school staff who gave of their time to ensure this productive night ran smoothly. Special mention is made here of the efforts of Ray Kuss and Brendan Barsby who went well above the call of duty with their work behind the scenes.
Instrumental Music
On Tuesday afternoon of this week our concert bands will perform a recruiting performance for students in years 3 and 4 in the Hall. Our strings students will perform a recruiting performance for year 2 and 3 students on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00pm in the hall.
Interschool Sport
Last Friday our year 6 students began a program of interschool sport. Teams have been nominated in the sports of Touch, Basketball, Softball, AFL and Cricket. Students must wear their blue school uniform shirts (not zone or sports house shirts) to these activities.
Grant Byrne Walkway
Since the beginning of this term our new walkway has been well used by our Prep classes. I think you will agree that the walkway has allowed the access we need to link all areas of our campus together. The approval for this walkway was through Grant Byrne from Department of Education and Training, Manager Infrastructure Strategy Branch. Mr Byrne is also a past student of Maryborough West State School, so we are referring to our walkway as the “Grant Byrne Walkway” in acknowledgement of the support received to complete the project.
Building Education Revolution Initiative - BER
(Library/Technology and Science building)
We recently met with the Design Manager - Stuart Harrison from Baulderstone, the company employed to commence this project, the Architect - Greg King and DET Project Coordinator - Rick Johnson to discuss the Site Plan for the Library and the Outdoor Learning Classroom in the Quad area. Also discussed were the internal Resource Centre plans. Acceptance of site plans were finalised and signed off by the school committee.
National School Pride project - NSP
This project covers the refurbishment and increased technology access of classrooms in Blocks B, F and A. Meetings with Gary Wilson and Brad Maker to asses our data technology needs for supporting interactive whiteboards have occurred. Assessment will be made as to the necessary upgrades to our network and plans were drawn up for positioning of data outlets and interactive whiteboards within identified classrooms.
Prep Open Day
Tomorrow we hold our Prep Open Day for all eligible children born between 01 July 2004 and 30 June 2005 from 10.00-11.30am. Please join us and the current prep children to participate in some fun activities in our Prep Classrooms and to learn some more about how Prep works at Maryborough West State School. If you are attending please bring a small morning tea snack for your child to eat.
A Birth Certificate is required as part of the enrolment process. Parents will need to bring this certificate with them to enrol their child. If you do not have a birth certificate application forms can be obtained from any courthouse or phoning the registry on 1300366430. Proof of address can be in the form of electricity, gas, telephone account or any official documents.
World Teachers’ Day a time to say thanks
Friday 30 October is World Teachers’ Day. This day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex society. At Maryborough West State School we will be acknowledging our Teachers and the outstanding work they perform each and every day by having a special morning tea.

LOTE News
On Monday 09 November, Maryborough West State School will be holding our first Japanese Speech Competition. Students from years 6 and 7 will be participating in this competition. Year 6 students nominated are: Claudia, Sophie, Kate, Anum, Nicole, Georgia, Brooke, Taylor, Rowan, Mitchell, Troy and Kaitlyn. Year 7 students nominated are: Zoe, Rebecca, Jacob, Florence, Jayannah, Megan, Nabighah, Teah, Tanika, Tamika and Simon. Congratulations to all those who tried out for the competition before the holidays.
All students must learn their speech off by heart. The speeches including their name, age, grade, as well as various other things about themselves. This is a great opportunity for students in Years 6 and 7 who are studying Japanese to extend themselves and enhance their level of language. These students have been practising very diligently over the past five weeks. We will have a special guest judge this year, Mrs Kuwazuru. Mrs Kuwazuru will also be helping the students practise their speeches and in the classroom with various activities. I would like to thank Mrs Kuwazuru for her support. First, second and third places will be announced on the day. The prizes for this competition have been purchased in Japan and will be presented on Friday 13 November at Assembly. Good luck to all who are participating. Parents are welcome to come and watch the competition. Competition starts at 2.00pm with the Year 6 students followed by Year 7 students at approximately 2.30pm. Please come and join us.

Chappy’s Chat
As it is World Teachers’ Day this Friday 30th October, I thought it a good time to share this poem with you.
Unity by Cleo V. Swarat
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher:
the tools she used where books and music and art;
one a parent
with a guiding hand and gentle loving heart.
And when at last their work was done,
they were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had worked into the child
could ever be sold or bought.
And each agreed she would have failed
if she had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school,
and behind the teacher stood the home!

Thank you to Brendan Barsby, Ray Kuss, Elizabeth Johansen, Greg Fletcher, Brett Grambower, Greg Finn, Wendy Benson, Ruth Brand, the whole staff who helped in numerous ways throughout the night (and week), Trudy Britton, Desley Hewitt, Sean Bryant, Maree Johnston, Carol McKeough, Elizabeth Burton, Kylie Hard, Helen Wakefield, Janice Piggford, Lorilee Robertson and her helpers and the P & C Committee because without their support we would not have been able to run the night successfully. Thank you also to our wonderful sponsors who donated prizes and their time to assist with Fun Fair.
For my first Fun Fair, I found the class performances and class display were of high quality and the students had done such a good job. Well done.
